Sessions & Users

The basic units of volume measurement in web analytics

In Simple Words (Zero Jargon):

The basic units of volume measurement in web analytics

Why It Is Critical

Sessions and Users are the two primary volume metrics in GA4. Users represent unique individuals (identified via User ID, Google signals, or device ID). Sessions represent a group of interactions within a continuous time period (30-minute timeout by default). One user can generate multiple sessions.

Calculation Example & Benchmark Matrix

MetricWhat It Means
UserA unique individual who visited your site. GA4 uses device ID, user ID, or Google signals.
New UserA user visiting for the first time - no prior sessions recorded. Key metric for acquisition.
Returning UserA user who has visited before. Key metric for retention and brand loyalty.
SessionA group of interactions within a continuous 30-min window. One user can have multiple sessions.
Sessions per UserAverage sessions per user - indicates audience stickiness and loyalty.
What You Get: The volume baseline for all other analytics calculations - conversion rate, pages per session, engagement rate, and acquisition cost all derive from these fundamentals.
