Audiences - Core, Custom & Lookalike
The three audience types every Meta advertiser uses
The three audience types every Meta advertiser uses
Why It Is Critical
Meta’s audience system covers the entire customer journey: Core (interest/demographic prospecting), Custom (first-party pixel/CRM data), and Lookalike (AI-modeled lookalikes of top buyers). Understanding which audience belongs at which funnel stage is essential.
How It Works & Underlying Dynamics
• Core Audiences: Cold prospecting via demographics & interests (broader targeting is now recommended). • Custom Audiences: Your most valuable asset (website visitors, product viewers, cart abandoners, customer list uploads). • Lookalike Audiences: Meta finds people statistically similar to your seed list. A 1% Lookalike is the closest and most precise; 10% is broad.
Calculation Example & Benchmark Matrix
| Custom Audience Type | Best Use Case |
|---|---|
| Website Visitors (all) | Everyone who visited your site in the last 30/60/180 days |
| Product Viewers | People who viewed specific products - high purchase intent |
| Add to Cart / No Purchase | Cart abandoners - extremely high intent, highest priority for retargeting |
| Past Purchasers | Existing customers - use for upsell, cross-sell, and exclusion |
| Lead Form Openers | People who started but did not complete a lead form |
| Video Viewers (25%/50%/75%) | Warm audiences from video content - strong for retargeting |
| Customer List Upload | Your CRM data matched to Meta profiles - for loyalty and exclusion |
'The quality of a Lookalike is entirely determined by the quality of the source. A Lookalike built from your top 100 customers by LTV will dramatically outperform one built from all website visitors. Feed Meta your best data, and it will find you more people like them.'
