GRP - Gross Rating Points
The standard unit of total advertising weight in media planning
In Simple Words (Zero Jargon):
A universal score for ad exposure calculated by multiplying what percent of the audience you reached by how many times they saw the ad.
Official Mathematical Equation
GRP = Reach% × Average Frequency (e.g. 40% Reach × 5 Frequency = 200 GRPs)
Why It Is Critical
Gross Rating Points measure total audience weight. 1 GRP equals 1% of the target audience reached once. In digital media planning, TRPs (Target Rating Points) calculate GRPs against a specific target audience rather than the general population to compare campaign weight across TV, digital video, and display.
Calculation Example & Benchmark Matrix
| GRP Weight Level | What It Represents |
|---|---|
| 100 GRPs | Light campaign - equivalent to reaching the entire target audience once on average |
| 200-300 GRPs | Moderate campaign - sufficient for maintaining brand awareness in established markets |
| 400-600 GRPs | Heavy campaign - used for major launches or competitive defence in high-noise categories |
| TRP (Target Rating Point) | GRPs calculated against a specific target audience rather than total population |
What You Get: A universal unit for comparing campaign weight - allows media plans across different channels and time periods to be evaluated on a common scale.
