Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
The industry-standard event-based web analytics platform
The industry-standard event-based web analytics platform
Why It Is Critical
Google Analytics 4 is the current industry-standard web analytics platform - and a mandatory tool for every performance marketer. It replaced Universal Analytics (UA) in July 2023. GA4 tracks user behaviour across websites and apps using an event-based data model (every interaction is an event), giving marketers a more flexible and complete picture of the customer journey than the session-based model of its predecessor.
How It Works & Underlying Dynamics
The Core Shift From Universal Analytics: In UA, a session was the primary container. In GA4, every interaction is an independent event: page_view, scroll, click, video_start, purchase, form_submit. This enables tracking complex multi-touch customer journeys across platforms.
Strategic Rules of Thumb & Execution Playbook
- Connect GA4 to Google Ads for cross-platform conversion sharing and audience import.
- Enable enhanced measurement for automatic tracking of scrolls, outbound clicks, video engagement, and file downloads.
- Set up conversion events (formerly 'goals') for every action that matters: purchase, lead form, newsletter sign-up.
- Link to BigQuery for raw data export if you need advanced SQL analysis.
- Configure data retention to 14 months (the maximum) - default 2-month retention loses historical cohort data.
Calculation Example & Benchmark Matrix
| Key Report | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| Acquisition Reports | Where your traffic comes from - channel, source, medium, campaign. Essential for budget decisions. |
| Engagement Reports | Which pages users visit, how long they stay, what they do. Essential for CRO and content decisions. |
| Conversion Reports | Which events and goals are being completed. Essential for measuring campaign outcomes. |
| Funnel Exploration | Custom funnel visualisation showing drop-off at each step. Essential for diagnosing conversion leaks. |
| Path Exploration | Visualises actual user journeys and unexpected exit points. |
| Segment Overlap | Compare how different user segments interact for audience analysis. |
| User Lifetime | Tracks cumulative revenue and behaviour per user over time for LTV analysis. |
'GA4 is not a reporting tool - it is a decision-making tool. Every report should answer a question that changes what you do next. If you are looking at GA4 data and not making a decision, you are spending time on analytics without getting value from it.'
