🔥 Tier 1 - Must KnowID: ctr

Click-Through Rate (CTR)

% of people who saw your ad and clicked it

In Simple Words (Zero Jargon):

The percentage of people who saw your ad and actually clicked on it.

Official Mathematical Equation
(Total Clicks ÷ Total Impressions) × 100

Why It Is Critical

CTR is the most immediate signal of creative relevance. It answers one question: does this ad make enough people want to click? A high CTR means your creative is resonating with your audience. A low CTR means either the wrong audience is seeing the ad, the creative is not compelling enough, or both.

Strategic Rules of Thumb & Execution Playbook

  • Use CTR to identify creative fatigue - a dropping CTR on a previously strong ad means the audience has seen it too many times.
  • A very high CTR with a very low conversion rate signals a message mismatch - the ad promises something the landing page doesn't deliver.
  • Test creative variations specifically to improve CTR before scaling budget.

Calculation Example & Benchmark Matrix

Platform / PlacementApproximate CTR Benchmark
Meta Feed Ads0.9% - 1.5% considered healthy
Meta Reels / Stories0.3% - 0.8% (swipe-up) - lower but cheaper CPM
Google Search Ads3% - 6% for branded; 1% - 3% for non-branded
Google Display0.1% - 0.35% - structurally low
LinkedIn Ads0.3% - 0.6% - lower due to professional context
Email Marketing1.5% - 3.5% for B2C; varies widely for B2B
'A high CTR is not the goal. The goal is profitable conversions. A 5% CTR feeding traffic to a broken landing page is worse than a 1% CTR that converts cleanly. CTR is the door; conversion rate is what matters on the other side of it.'
