Cost Per Click (CPC)
Cost paid each time a user clicks your ad
The exact amount of money you pay the ad network each time someone clicks your ad.
Why It Is Critical
CPC is the traffic-buying cost. It tells you what you are paying to bring one person to your landing page, app, or offer. On its own, a low CPC looks great - but a low CPC combined with a poor conversion rate is more expensive than a high CPC with a strong conversion rate. CPC must always be read alongside conversion rate to mean anything.
How It Works & Underlying Dynamics
On most platforms, CPC is derived from CPM and CTR. The relationship is: CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 10). This means you can lower your effective CPC either by finding cheaper impressions (lower CPM) or by improving your creative click-through rate (higher CTR). Understanding this relationship gives you two levers to pull instead of one.
Strategic Rules of Thumb & Execution Playbook
- Track CPC as a creative efficiency signal - if CPC rises without a change in bidding, your creative may be fatiguing.
- Compare CPC by placement and audience to find the most cost-efficient traffic sources.
- Always pair CPC analysis with conversion rate. A ₹5 CPC sending traffic that converts at 0.5% is worse than a ₹15 CPC sending traffic that converts at 3%.
'A low CPC is not a win. It is a half-answer. The full answer is: what happens to those clicks after they land? Cheap traffic that does not convert is the most expensive traffic there is.'
