🔥 Tier 1 - Must KnowID: bounceRateEngagementRate
Bounce Rate vs. Engagement Rate
How users interact (or don't) with your landing pages
In Simple Words (Zero Jargon):
How users interact (or don't) with your landing pages
Official Mathematical Equation
GA4 Bounce Rate = 100% − Engagement Rate
Why It Is Critical
In Universal Analytics, Bounce Rate measured single-page sessions. In GA4, Engagement Rate measures the percentage of sessions that were 'engaged' (lasted 10+ seconds, had a conversion event, or viewed 2+ pages). GA4's Bounce Rate is simply 100% minus Engagement Rate. A 35% Bounce Rate in GA4 means 65% of sessions were successfully engaged.
Strategic Rules of Thumb & Execution Playbook
- Use Engagement Rate by landing page to identify which pages retain users and which lose them immediately.
- A high Bounce Rate on a paid traffic landing page signals a message mismatch between ad promise and page content.
- Compare Engagement Rate across traffic sources (Paid Search vs Paid Social vs Organic).
Calculation Example & Benchmark Matrix
| Metric | Definition |
|---|---|
| GA4 Engaged Session | Session lasting 10+ seconds, OR had a conversion, OR had 2+ pageviews |
| GA4 Engagement Rate | % of sessions that were engaged - higher is better |
| GA4 Bounce Rate | 100% minus Engagement Rate - lower is better |
| UA Bounce Rate (old) | % of single-page sessions with no interaction - not comparable to GA4 |
'A high bounce rate is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It tells you people left - it does not tell you why. Pair it with heatmaps, session recordings, and funnel analysis to find the actual cause.'
